A 10-year-old schoolgirl escaped unharmed after she was almost abducted on Wednesday.

The child is a student of the Fanny Village Government Primary School.

Reports say around 7.30 am, the girl was standing on the pavement near her school when a black Isuzu pickup pulled alongside her.

The driver reportedly shouted, "come here little girl" and grabbed at her shirt.

She managed to break free and ran to a woman who was standing nearby. The child was subsequently taken to a police station and was interviewed in the presence of her mother.

The suspect's vehicle was intercepted shortly after by Municipal Officers. The 23-year-old driver who is a business owner from the area was arrested and taken to Point Fortin Police Station.

Police also questioned the suspect and charges are expected to be laid on Thursday.
