$100K bail for Corporation Chairman on corruption charges

Chairman of the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation Glen Ram was granted $100,000 bail after appearing in court on Thursday afternoon on two corruption charges.

The councillor for the Biche/Charuma electoral district was arrested by officers of the Anti-Corruption Investigative Bureau (ACIB) on Wednesday in connection with accepting a bribe and corruptly soliciting a $1,500 bribe in June 2018.

Ram was granted bail to cover both charges which were laid indictably, when he appeared before Magistrate Marisa Gomez in the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court.

The United National Congress (UNC) has claimed that Ram’s arrest is political, and a part of the ruling PNM’s plan to “lock up” people.

The matter has been adjourned to June 18 and transferred to the Rio Claro Magistrates' Court.
