$100K bail for woman accused of hitting child with wood
Created : 18 October 2019
A 36-year-old woman who allegedly struck a 20-month old boy with a piece of wood has been charged.
Kelly Ann Mercury, of Enterprise, was charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
She was represented by attorney Shiva Boodoo.
Cpl Phillips was the complainant (charging officer) in this matter.
The matter was heard in the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan.
In his submissions for bail on behalf of his client, Boodoo said the injury to the child was accidental, as there was no intent to hit the toddler. Instead the injury occurred while his client was allegedly defending herself during an attack.
After further submissions, including a medical report of injuries sustained by Mercury in support that she had been attacked, bail was granted at $100,000.
The matter was adjourned to November 14.
The toddler was injured on Sunday during a fight with two women along Freedom Street, Enterprise.
He was in the arms of his 42-year-old grandmother when he was struck.
