19 non-nationals held after reports of ill-treatment at bars

19 persons were detained this weekend on suspicions on being illegal immigrants.

Police said that 15 of those individuals were suspected to be Venezuelans, while four were suspected to be Chinese nationals.

At the time none of the detainees had documents in their possession which indicated their legal stay in this country.

The exercises were conducted in Aripero and Erin, police said, and were spearheaded by ASP Ramdeen.

The 15 persons, including women, were detained after police received intelligence that persons were being taken advantage of in bars throughout South Oropouche.

This led exercises to be conducted on Friday night and Saturday night during which the 15 suspected Venezuelan nationals were held.

The four Chinese nationals were held by officers on patrol as they were walking along Erin Beach.

The men spoke no English, police said and had no legal documents on their person at the time.

All 19 persons were detained and are expected to be interviewed by Immigration officers, before charges, if any, are laid against them.

More on this as it becomes available.
