19-yr-old in court after step-father stabbed to death

A 19-year-old man was scheduled to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate on Wednesday to face charges stemming from his step-father's death.

The accused was charged by WPC Sasha Mendoza Brown of the Homicide Bureau. Instructions were given yesterday by officials from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The teenager was held last Thursday following the killing of 33-year-old Matthew St John.

According to police reports, around 12.30 pm that day, the deceased and the 19-year-old relative got into a confrontation, which resulted in St John being stabbed in the neck.

Police were told that the 33-year-old attacked the younger man with a knife, who was able to overpower the relative and secure the weapon.

However, police were told, the relative continued to attack the 19-year-old, which resulted in him using the knife to defend himself.

The teenager notified other relatives of what transpired and made no attempts to flee the scene.

The police were notified and a team of officers led by Sup Martin, Insp Birbal, Insp Persad, Cpl Romeo, and Cpl Degale, among others, visited the scene.

Police found and seized a knife with a grey handle from the scene.

The teenager has since been detained and is aiding with the investigation.

WPC Mendoza Brown is continuing inquiries.

More on this as it becomes available.
