$50K bail for prison officer caught smuggling cigarettes

Bail was granted at $50,000 to a prison officer who attempted to smuggle contraband items into the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca last week.

Arnold Jairam, 49, who has 23 years of service, was held on last Wednesday night trying to enter the compound with some of the items strapped to his body.

He appeared yesterday before Magistrate Avion Gill.

He was charged by PC Kerr.

After submissions were made to the court, the matter was adjourned.

Jairam was held last Wednesday in a combined effort between the Prisons Authorities and the Arouca CID.

He was held after he attempted to smuggle 400 cigarettes into the prison in packages strapped to his chest.

An additional search was conducted on the officer’s vehicle, a further 600 cigarettes were found.

Officers also found and seized two Samsung cellular phones, two scales, and an assortment of chargers and headsets.

This exercise was spearheaded by Cpl Forde, assisted by members of the Prison Intelligence Unit and the K-9 Unit.
