71-yr-old brutally beaten during robbery

Police are investigating after five men viciously beat a 71-year-old pensioner during a robbery in Santa Flora.

The victim told police that he was asleep at his home along Francis Trace Extension around 2.00 am on Saturday morning when he was awakened by shouting outside his front door.

The elderly man went to investigate, and upon opening the door, he was accosted by five men who were armed with pieces of wood and cutlasses.

The men attacked the 71-year-old then took his cash, a quantity of jewellery, and electronic items, including a cellular phone and a 56-inch TV.

The attackers then fled the scene.

The victim made a report to the Santa Flora police station and was taken for medical treatment at the Siparia Health Facility.

He was then transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital where he received further treatment before he was discharged.
