99-year-old man hauled into court for unpaid property tax

When it comes to paying one’s taxes, age does not appear to be a consideration.

At least that appeared to be the case, based on the realities which were recently faced by 99-year-old Vincent Dunkley of a St Elizabeth address.

In fact, when Dunkley did not appear before a recent sitting of the Tax Court in the parish for failure to pay outstanding property tax, a bench warrant was ordered for his arrest.

The warrant was duly executed, resulting in him being brought to court as a prisoner like any other on Wednesday.

The senior citizen said he was ill and unable to attend court on the date that was stated on the summons that had been served on him.

Dunkley, who was offered bail in the sum of $20,000, told the court that his daughter who is overseas, had promised to pay the taxes.

His fate is to be determined upon his return to court on April 11.

Three other senior citizens were also in court on Wednesday for having, likewise, failed to pay their property tax.
