AATT corrects media reports: robbery was not on airport tarmac
The Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (AATT) is seeking to clarify media reports which stated that the robbery which occurred at the cargo facility of the Piarco International Airport on the Golden Grove Road earlier today, took place on the airport tarmac.
The amount of cash is yet to be confirmed, but initial reports indicate the sum to be $5 million bound for Tobago.
The Authority, in a statement issued on Wednesday night, said contrary to media reports the incident took place within an area with public access where persons conduct commercial cargo business. The release noted that the robbery occurred at the time when the custody of cash was being transferred from Amalgamated Security Services to an airline security company within the public area of the cargo compound.
The AATT reiterated that there was no breach of the restricted secured areas of the Piarco International Airport.
It added that the Authority’s Security Force responded in less than two minutes to initial reports and further sought to allay fears as to the safety of those who were in the compound during the ordeal.
"The Authority assures that the safety and security of all aircraft and passengers were not compromised during the incident. The Authority continues to cooperate with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service as the investigation proceeds", the statement said.
