Abu Bakr: Let my son go
Imam Yasin Abu Bakr
Leader of the Jamaat Al Muslimeen, Imam Yasin Abu Bakr is calling on the authorities to release his son, political leader of the New National Vision Fuad Abu Bakr.
The younger Abu Bakr was arrested earlier today during protests in Port of Spain, allegedly for inciting protests and violence.
In a press conference this afternoon, the Jamaat leader explained that there was no reason for his son to be singled out.
“If he is speaking out on behalf of some people then all politicians should be arrested tomorrow and charged because he is the leader of the New National Vision and all politicians claim to speak on behalf of the people,” he said.
Abu Bakr says that as a result of his son’s platform, he should be allowed to express views on behalf of himself and those he represents.
“We are asking for an immediate release. I heard the press conference today by the Minister of National Security and I agree with him in some respects; about people having peaceful protests and it is everywhere in the world now, especially where African people are concerned, there is this cry for justice,” he said.
The Imam called for protesters to remain focused on the goal at hand.
“I would urge all the protesters not to be drawn into a fire fight with the police. I can’t say that enough times. Do not let them draw you into this fire fight with the police; you can have legitimate, peaceful protests and I believe at the end of the day we will achieve some measure of justice,” he pleaded.
Lawyer for Fuad Abu Bakr, CJ Williams says he’s willing to do whatever it takes, within legal means, to help his client retain his freedom in the soonest possible time.
