Alleged bandit shot dead by pensioner
An unidentified man was shot dead this morning by an 84-year-old home owner.
The suspect, police were told, was attempting to steal the penioner's van at his home in Tableland.
According to reports, the 84-year-old man, who is a retired game warden and the holder of a licensed firearm, was awoken by his son, who told him that people were in the garage of the family's home.
He took out his firearm and went downstairs where he observed two strange men, whose faces were covered by hoodies, in the garage. The engine of his truck was on and the vehicle was idling.
The elderly man said he ordered the two to exit the property, but one of the suspects raised a firearm and pointed it at the two men.
Fearful for his life, shot at the armed man. The other suspect fled the scene.
The police were notified and officers from the Tableland Police Station responded and found the deceased on the ground of the garage. Next to him, was a loaded firearm and tools which police believe were used to break into the home.
No one else was injured in the incident.
