Alleged gang member shot dead by police

CSI is reportedly on the scene in Chaguanas where an alleged member of Unruly Isis was shot dead by police around 4 pm on Friday.

The victim has been identified as Jelani Martin. Martin, 24, reportedly exchanged gunfire with Central Division Officers and was subsequently shot multiple times about the body. He was taken to the Chaguanas Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

Police sources say the deceased was known to them for offences ranging from murder to drug and firearm possession.

The incident occurred hours after Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams delivered the feature address at the launch of the national pilot project for police body worn cameras at the St Joseph Police Station on Friday.

Williams had stated that the cameras would provide transparency on police interactions with civilians.

Sources say police are mobilising ahead of planned protest action by residents this evening.
