Arima man hiding in yard caught with gun, ammo

An Arima man has been arrested for possession of a firearm and a quantity of ammunition after attempting to elude police capture by hiding in a yard at Hoyte Avenue, Pinto.

Officers of the Pinto Police Post on mobile patrol along Maturita Main Road, Pinto, around 9:15pm on Sunday, spotted the man walking along the roadway.

On seeing the officers, the man ran off.

Officers pursued the suspect, who jumped over a concrete wall and into someone’s yard on Hoyte Avenue.

The officers requested assistance by contacting the Northern Division Operations Centre, which dispatched officers of the Arima Criminal Investigations Department and the Northern Division Rapid Response Unit.

A search of the premises resulted in the suspect being found hiding in the yard.

But, as officers were attempting to arrest the suspect, a struggle ensued.

The man; a 27-year-old, of Bypass Road, Maturita, was subsequently subdued and a search of his person conducted.

Officers found a Beretta pistol, outfitted with an extended magazine, containing 25 rounds of 9mm ammunition in his possession.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the Pinto Police Post to await charges.
