Bhoe Tewarie: Why so much fuss over Marriage Bill?
In a statement, Dr Tewarie said things happen which could warrant child marriage including; young people falling in love, teenaged sex, sometimes underage pregnancies and unintended consequences as a result of the denial of marriage to children under the age of 18.
He said it would be better to make provisions under the law for such realities, as a sensitive, caring and enlightened society.
The Caroni Central MP adds that the request is an urgent one as Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi is hoping to pass legislation without the 3/5 majority passage of the Bill.
“Why 16? Because that allows any youth to finish high school which is good for him and her and for any offspring and offers a platform for further education and skills and better job and income or entrepreneurial prospects.
And to keep the Legislative process honest, should we not revert to the original 3/5 majority passage of the bill because of the violation of Sections 4 and 5 of the Constitution as originally presented in the Bill?
This is necessary because the laws that are being amended are all laws linked to religious practice and past concessions on these – Muslim, Hindu, Orissa. The threat by the AG to avoid larger majority laws in the future, makes this even more important and urgent.
Citizens what do you say? Why have a needless battle on this when with reason, compromise and good will it is easy to resolve”
