Boy, 9, dies after being hit by maxi taxi
After fighting for his life for over a week, nine-year-old Emmanuel John succumbed to injuries he sustained during a road traffic accident.
Young Emmanuel died Thursday afternoon at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.
He was surrounded by his relatives and loved ones.
John was struck by a maxi last Wednesday while attempting to cross the Priority Bus Route, near Sixth Avenue, Barataria.
He was rushed to the Mt Hope Hospital where he was treated.
Unfortunately, he was pronounced brain dead earlier this week after doctors failed to detect any significant neurological activity.
Young Emmanuel was taken off life support on Thursday, and he died shortly after.
The driver of the maxi stopped to render assistance and was questioned by police.
However, he was not kept in custody, LoopTT was told, and was released after questioning.
That said, investigators reserve the right to re-arrest the driver should evidence arise which would indicate that charges should be laid.
Several statements have been taken from persons who claimed to have seen the accident have been recorded.
CCTV footage circulating on social media showed that traffic light was green at the time the maxi-taxi driver was proceeding when the child darted across the roadway.
