Brave officer interrupts Port of Spain robbery
An off duty police officer narrowly escaped serious injury following a shoot out in Port of Spain on Saturday afternoon.
PC Mendoza, Loop News was told, was in the vicinity of Jason's Jewellery Store along Queen Street, when he observed three men approach a young man who had exited the store.
One of the men pulled out a firearm and announced a hold-up.
The victim, a 24-year-old man from Laventille Road, Laventille, was relieved of a $50,000 gold chain.
PC Mendoza, on observing what happened, called on the three men to stop. The men, however, allegedly fired several shots at the officer, who returned fire.
Following this, Sgt. Crawford along with a party of officers attached to Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), Duncan Street Post responded to the loud explosions in the lower Duncan street, area.
The men then ran into an apartment building at Duncan Street, the officers proceeded to the apartment building and were informed by a resident of one of the apartments that two men ran into her home without her consent.
The officers entered the apartment and PC Marcial entered a bedroom and observed a 24-year-old man, of Beetham Gardens, holding a Glock pistol firearm, and a magazine in his hand.
In another room nearby, a 25-year-old man of Phase 3, Beetham Gardens, was hiding, he was held by PC Lewis and a gold chain was recovered in his right front pants pocket.
The items were seized from both men and arrested.
