Businessman offers 5000 tonne barge to ship supplies to Dominica

San Fernando businessman Ashmeade Ali is offering a 5000 tonne barge for anyone who has items to ship to Dominica.

Ali said the barge will be in the country on Tuesday and will be packed with items that week.

He said he hopes to be in Dominica by October 9.

In the meantime, he is calling on the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and coast guard in Dominica to oversee the discharge of the vessel once it arrives there. The TTDF has been manning the port in Dominica since Hurricane Maria ravaged the island.

Ali said he has called the TTDF repeatedly and was told to write a letter with his request but is yet to get a concrete answer.

He said that was the main reason he is seeking publicity.

Another reason is to fill the barge, although he believes the entire barge won't be filled.

"I don't think we can fill that barge, if we fill it then I should be Prime Minister," he said.

Ali said he has a foundation called Ash-Nad through which he is accustomed doing acts of charity but without the publicity.

Anyone wishing to ship items to Dominica can call Ali at 680-0130.
