Caroni man charged with murder of former SRP officer
A 22-year-old man has been charged with the murder of 44-year-old security guard Cleavon Frederick, who was gunned down outside a supermarket on January 23, 2019.
According to a statement issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), 22-year-old Leon Shukla, of Kelly Village, Caroni, was also charged with possession of firearm and possession of ammunition when he appeared before Magistrate Marissa Gomez in the Port of Spain 1st Magistrates’ Court, on Friday February 1, 2019, to answer the charges.
Frederick, an estate constable and former Special Reserve Officer (SRP) of 9th Avenue North, Barataria, was working at Boundary Liquor Mart at Boundary Road Extension, San Juan, on January 23 when three men armed with guns entered.
One of the men approached the victim and fired two shots at him before they made their escape in a silver Nissan Almera motor vehicle. The victim was taken to Eric Williams’ Medical Sciences Centre for treatment where he subsequently died.
Following investigations supervised by ASP (Ag.) Sean Dhilpaul and W/Sgt. Belinda Sylvester, Shukla was arrested on Sunday 27th January, 2019.
Charges were laid by Cpl Asim Hosein of Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region 2, on Thursday 31st January, 2019, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC, on that same date.
The matter was adjourned to Thursday, February, 7, 2019.
