Cheques distributed to victims of Tropical Storm Bret
Cheques have been distributed to 68 households within the Siparia Regional Corporation by the Social Development and Family Services Ministry following the aftermath of Tropical Storm Bret.
The families identified were referred by the Corporation, inclusive of communities within Siparia, Fyzabad, South Oropuche, Woodland and environs.
Some cheques were valued as much as $10,000.
These individuals are also being assessed to receive assistance with minor structural repairs, as well as counselling and other social support services.
The cheques were provided to replace basic items lost as a result of the disaster, and to restore a sense of normalcy to affected persons.
Minister Cherrie-Ann Crichlow-Cockburn expressed empathy to those affected by the storm as she heard some of the struggles faced by recipients during and after the tropical storm.
The Minister encouraged them to keep the faith in knowing that the Ministry is doing all it can to provide the necessary support at this challenging time.
She said the Ministry’s Team worked tirelessly to ensure that the grants were ready within the shortest possible time and reiterated the Government’s commitment to bringing immediate relief.
Relief efforts continue in the various communities across the country affected by the storm, with similar distributions having taken place within the Diego Martin Regional Corporation, Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation, and the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation.
A distribution ceremony is scheduled at the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation today, where it is expected that 141 cheques will be distributed.
Food Cards are also being distributed as required in all affected regions.
