Cherry thief jailed after stabbing cop with glass bottle
A 52-year-old man, who attacked a police officer on Saturday with a shard of glass, has been sentenced to two years hard labour.
Allan Ragoonanan, of Marabella, appeared on Monday before Senior Magistrate Cherril-Anne Antoine at the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court.
He was charged with malicious wounding, assault, being in an enclosed premises without permission, larceny, and two counts of resisting arrest.
The State was represented by police prosecutor Sgt Cleyon Seedan.
Ragoonanan allegedly attacked two police officers – PC Mark Balkaran and PC Anthony Figaro – as they responded to a report of trespassing at a house along Kenneth Drive, Gopaul Lands, Marabella.
When officers arrived, they found Ragoonanan with a bag of cherries.
He was confronted, and during which, Ragoonanan allegedly picked up a broken bottle which was on the ground and attacked Balkaran.
The officer received a slash to his left arm.
Ragoonanan was eventually detained and taken into custody.

Ragoonanan did not waste the court’s time and plead guilty on his first appearance.
After further submissions, he was jailed.
