Chinese national fined for entering country illegally
For admitting that he entered the country illegally and for not wasting the court’s time, a Chinese national was fined $15,000.
Hua Lun Wu appeared before a Port of Spain Magistrate yesterday where he was fined.
He was arrested on February 9 during a road block exercise by officers of the Port of Spain Division near the Riverside Plaza, in east Port of Spain.
When the matter was called, Wu appeared before Magistrate Rehannna Ali.
He was represented by defence attorney Indarjit Seuraj.
The attorney submitted that while the issue of illegal immigration was a serious one, in the case of his client he did not believe that it was one which required a custodial sentence, noting that at the time of his arrest Wu had in his possession an estimated $14,000, which he was going to use to secure a one way ticket home.
After further submissions to the court, the Magistrate upheld the attorney’s submissions, and fined Hu instead.
However, the Chinese national was given one month to pay the fine, or face a default of five months of hard labour.
