Coastguardsman in court after WPC set on fire
A 33-year-old coastguardsman was expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate on Friday on allegations of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The victim, a 29-year-old woman police constable, was identified as Kelly Ann Humphrey.
She is still warded in a critical condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope after she was doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire on Sunday.
Officials said they completed their investigations on Thursday and had received instructions to proceed against a 33-year-old man who was the main suspect in the matter.
The incident took place around 4:00 am on Sunday morning, at the woman's Boundary Road, El Socorro, home.
From police reports, the two were heard arguing, following which there was a loud noise.
It was suspected that the confrontation became physical, during which the woman was set on fire.
The police and paramedics were notified and the injured woman was rushed to the Medical Complex in Mt Hope where she was treated.
