Concern over SEA Math exam: Garcia says challenging questions expected
Created : 6 April 2019
Education Minister Anthony Garcia on Friday responded to concerns surrounding the mathematics component of the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) examination.
It comes as some students have stated that the Math paper was challenging.
Garcia said this was expected, as he responded to an urgent question in Parliament from Opposition MP and former Education Minister Dr. Tim Gopeesingh on the matter.
Gopeesingh asked the minister to indicate the consequences and remedial action required to be taken with respect to the concerns regarding the mathematical component of the SEA.
“I know not of what the member of Caroni speaks. If the member is referring to comments made by students that certain questions were challenging, that is expected. It happens all the time. Any educator, who is worth his salt, will know that a well-designed examination must include a wide range of questions coming from simple questions to the higher order questions that require interpretation and analysis. And this is exactly what happened,” he stated.
He added that CXC has standard procedures for marking exams including any issues that may arise.
