Condolences pour in after death of PNM Councillor
Members of the People's National Movement (PNM), friends and acquaintances offered condolences upon learning of the death of councillor for Belmont East, Darryl Rajpaul.
Rajpaul passed away on Saturday night. His cause of death is not yet known, however he did attend a football match on Saturday evening as part of the Port-of-Spain Corporation Small Goal Champions League. He was due to attend the final on Sunday.
PNM Public Relations Officer, Stuart Young, offered condolences via a social media statement on Sunday:
"It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of pain that I say farewell to one of the hardest working, genuine and supportive elected representatives I have had the privilege of knowing and working with, Councillor Darryl Rajpaul."
"Elected Councillor for Belmont East. "Raj", (as he was fondly and commonly known), you will be missed, and as we mourn your departure from this world we rejoice in knowing that you have gone to a better one. May God bless Raj's soul and his family and friends at this time of grief and loss," Young said.
Hillan Morean, Councillor for St Ann's River North, mourned his loss and celebrated his achievements:
"The Port-of-Spain Corporation has lost a giant in Councillor Darryl Rajpaul, the representative for Belmont East, who passed away last night. Godspeed Raj, the man we called Doc because of his likeness to Dr. Eric Williams.
"Every month. Every meeting. Darryl Rajpaul came and fought to get things done for his residents in Belmont East. Fought tooth and nail and called out nonsense. People do not know how hard it is fighting for them in this imperfect system of local government. Rajpaul never stopped fighting.
"Friday you told us all is ready to roll out the Port-of-Spain Corporation Small Goal Champions League final round. This competition was your 'baby' as it was used to bring together people from all of Port-of-Spain even if they were unfriendly towards each other. But not on the court. This was a peace initiative. I remember watching you on TV with then Mayor Lee Sing and me taking interest because of what it meant and my love for football. I didn't even dream of being a Councillor. You put everything in place for tomorrow's kickoff. It hurts that you are not going to be there. RIP Councillor Darryl Rajpaul," Morean said.
Brian Charles, captain of the Desperadoes Steel Orchestra, said Rajpaul will be deeply missed.
"On behalf of the management and players of the desperadoes family we express our deepest condolences to the family of one of our fallen soldiers Mr Darryl Rajpaul on his passing.....RIP....he'll be surely missed."
Meanwhile, attorney Farai Hove lauded Rajpaul as a 'fighter' and mentor in local government.
"Councillor Darryl Rajpaul selfless, hardworking, a fighter, independent, a loving father, a community activist, a warrior, a man of valour a man that put country even before himself. A mentor in local government representation. You my friend will be missed."
"The amount of Pro Bono legal work you made me do for your burgesses brother I will miss you dearly. Any call I got from you was for me to help your burgesses and never to help you. God Bless you comrade and brother...God bless you and May your soul rest in peace and rise again in eternal Glory."
Chaguaramas councillor Akeliah Glasgow also mourned his loss.
"A councillor is first responder, the first one on the ground, the one everyone expects to get everything done, the one who is taken for granted. I don't think people will ever appreciate how hard we try to get things done through an imperfect system."
"As we have lost yet another Councillor, it reminds me of the saying "you never know what you have until it's gone". Darryl Rajpaul was indeed a true example of what a councillor should be."
"My prayers are with his family, his colleagues at POSCC and the residents of Belmont East. As the finals of the POS football league; his baby, takes place tonight, I'm saddened that he will not be there. May the good Lord bless his soul and comfort his loved one at this trying time," she said.
