The Congress of the People (COP) has appointed an interim political leader.

Kirt Sinnette was confirmed as the party’s interim leader following an emergency National Council meeting on Saturday.

Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan stepped down as political leader following the COP’s loss at the recently contested general election.

The party contested four seats but attracted just 467 votes total, based on preliminary figures released by the Election and Boundaries Commission (EBC).

The highest number of votes for the COP was 188, in the St Augustine seat which Seepersad-Bachan contested. Sinnette, the party's candidate for Laventille West, secured 47 votes.

Sinnette will assume the political leadership position until the COP holds its leadership election which is due in December 2020.
