Six major companies have joined forces with the Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment (DIQE) to ‘Be the Solution, Beat Plastic Pollution’ for this year’s International Coastal Clean-Up in Tobago.

Students of the Civilian Conservation Corps, managers, and staff of the Division of Tourism, Culture, and Transportation; Royal Bank; B-Mobile; WASA; T&TEC; and DIQE will take to the shoreline this weekend to clean the island’s beaches.

The International Coastal Clean-up, which has seen more than 30 years is geared at raising awareness of coastal issues and the threats of pollution on the environment, wildlife, marine life and economies at large.

Environment Secretary, Kwesi Des Vignes said that one of the biggest strengths in environmental protection is a public consciousness that connects the environment to the quality of our daily life and future. “Last year, 510 volunteers from Tobago collected and disposed of some 1,797 kgs. of waste. This was equivalent to 295 garbage bags from eight beaches or 8 miles. This fight for trash free seas is close to Tobago’s heart as our tourism and one of our main food sources are benched on Tobago’s beauty and quality of our waters. International Coastal Clean-Up is all ‘ah we business’,” the Secretary said.

Councillor Des-Vignes is expected to join other volunteers at Prince Bay, Roxborough; Little Rockly Bay, Lambeau; and Courland Bay, Plymouth.

The cleaning is scheduled as follows:

Saturday, September 15 from 7 am

-Courland Bay (Plymouth)
-Minister’s Bay (Bacolet)
-Little Rockly Bay (Lambeau)
-Prince Bay (Roxborough)
-Tyrrel’s Bay (Speyside)
-Carapuse Bay (Belle Garden)

Sunday, September 16 from 7 am
-La Guira (Kilgwyn)
-Sandy Point (Crown Point)
