Couple shot in robbery gone wrong in Carenage
A manhunt has been launched for a man who shot a couple in Carenage on Thursday morning in what police suspect is a robbery gone wrong.
The victims have been identified as Justin Joseph Phillips, 26, from Diego Martin, and 19-year-old Shania Mathura, from Chaguanas.
According to police reports, the two were at Dean’s Bay, Carenage, when they were approached by an unfamiliar man.
The man, police were told, was of African descent, approximately 5 ft, 6 inches in height, medium build, and was wearing a blue and white striped polo shirt and dark-coloured 3/4 pants, with a black pair of sneakers.
The man pulled out a firearm and announced a hold-up.
However, almost immediately after, he began shooting at the couple.
Phillips was hit four times, while Mathura was hit in her left leg.
The suspect then escaped in Phillips’ brown Hyundai Elantra which was parked nearby.
The police were notified, and a team of officers from the Western Division responded.
During an intercept attempt by officers, the assailant crashed the stolen car into the wall of the Trinidad and Tobago Yacht Club.
The suspect then escaped by running north along La Horquette Valley Road.
Both shooting victims were taken to the St. James Medical Facility.
A team of officers from the division, led by Superintendent Mark and Inspector Birbal, visited the scene.
