Couva man, 52, arrested with $24 M worth of drugs
Police have arrested a 52-year-old Couva man who was found in possession of $24 million dollars worth of drugs as well as two guns and an assortment of ammunition on November 29.
According to reports, Outhar Maraj of Mc Bean Village, Couva was driving along Morequito Road, Valsayn, near the Valpark Shopping Plaza, when his vehicle was intercepted by officers who were acting on information received. A search of the vehicle resulted in three white crocus bags and one black garbage bag with 56.56 kilogrammes of cocaine being found in the trunk. The cocaine was valued at $22.6 million. A search warrant was subsequently executed at Maraj's Maruana Road, Valsayn, home where 17.38 kilogrammes of marijuana worth $1.5 million were found.
Police also found and seized two revolvers, two pistols and 331 rounds of assorted ammunition.
A second search warrant was executed at the 52-year-old man's primary residence at Mc Bean Village, Couva, however, nothing illegal was found. Maraj was arrested and was subsequently charged on December 1. He appeared before the Tunapuna 2nd Magistrates’ Court on December 4 on two counts of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking; one count of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking; possession of four firearms and a quantity of assorted ammunition.
The matter was adjourned to December 5 and was transferred to the Tunapuna 1st Magistrates’ Court.
According to a statement from the TTPS, the seizure and subsequent arrest were the result of weeks of surveillance and collaboration among the Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit (OCIU), Transnational Organised Crime Unit and the Strategic Services Agency.
