Cuban national killed by police

A Cuban national was shot and killed by a police officer in Princes Town on Friday.

He has been identified as 53-year-old Carlos Manuel Olivere. 

Police said Olivere was a street dweller.

According to reports, around 10:15am two municipal police officers were on mobile patrol along Cacique Street, Princes Town when they were alerted to a fight in progress between two men.

They intervened and separated the men.

Police said there was a struggle and one of the officers was struck several times on his arm and head.

The other officer shot at Olivere, hitting him in the chest.

He was taken to the Princes Town District Health Facility where he was pronounced dead.

The injured officer also sought medical attention.

Inspector Mohammed and other officers visited the scene and interviewed several people.

Enquiries are continuing.
