Cut Yuh Style Barber challenge is back

For the past two years, Barataria Barbershop  KJ’s Quality Styles has made its mark on the local beauty industry with their annual Barber Battle and Seminar – Cut Yuh Style.

This year, for the third edition they are becoming more inclusive and adding Beauty (hair styling) to the lineup of competition and educational seminars.

This year’s event will be held at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya on Sunday, August 26.

The 2018 theme “Together As One” is aiming to bring together the Region’s best in one place to battle for barbering and beauty supremacy. The Cut Yuh Style team anticipates that this year’s battle will bring together 24 of the top barbers and stylists across Trinidad and Tobago and the Region.

The main goal of the Battle is to create and develop new entrepreneurs in the barber and beauty industry. Outside of the competition where the best of the best show off their skills and tricks, the event is a space of comradery and space to learn! Seminars were held in the first year and second year by Darrin Lyons aka DL Master Barber.

DL is from California and is so much more than a talented stylist, he's a speaker, educator, author, and business owner. He spoke to participants about the business of barbering, how you can offer better customer service, charging what you're worth.

In the second year, they also invited Rob the Original, hair artist extraordinaire from Texas, he aspired to be an artist never imagining himself a barber, but with his background in drawing Rob the Original changed the way we look at haircuts.  He has pioneered a new way of thinking about what a barber does. He hosted a hair art workshop and feature.

The CYS team prides itself in youth development and entrepreneurship - one of their success stories features the current two time champion, Nicholas May of Ultimate Barber Shop acquired his own barber salon in Curepe within the past year, an accomplishment he credits greatly to his winning - a long-awaited dream fully materialised.

Another way to encourage entrepreneurship is through exhibitor booths where businesses are encouraged to display and sell their products and services to both the competitors and attendees. Some exhibitors on board are Basic Hair Care, Body Delights by Renee, Guardian Life and Elegant Yaak to name a few.

This year, the team is working assiduously to ensure once again they host a packed house, who will be entertained and educated with cutting-edge techniques in the world of superior hair care. With seminars on topics such as using enhancements, social media marketing, scissor work, making and repairing of dreadlocs, tips and tricks to achieve flawless installations facilitated by Nicholas may of Ultimate Barber; Ata Francois of Five Star Barber and Beauty Salon and Willon Peters of Crispy Clean Cuts and for the beauty - Khadija Peters of Locs Creator; Crystal Mc Pherson of Crystal’s Touch and Nakisha Murray of Rich Girls Empire.

Barbers and Hair Stylists will compete in categories such as Most Creative Braids Style; Most Creative Locs Style; Best Freestyle Design; and Fastest Skin Fade.

Cut Yuh Style prides themselves on the fact that the Barber and Beauty Battle is an event the entire family can enjoy.
