Dad awakes to man engaged in sex act with teen daughter

A Mayaro father received an alarming phone call around 11 pm on Wednesday that there was an intruder in his home.

What he thought was a thief turned out to be a 21-year-old man whom he found in a compromising position with his daughter.

Reports say the man awoke to his neighbour's call. He was told that a man was spotted climbing his balcony. When he opened his daughter's bedroom door, he found a half-naked Rafeeq Haniff engaged in what appeared to be a sexual act with his 15-year-old child.

A confrontation ensued and the girl's dad restrained the intruder. He contacted Mayaro police and the suspect was arrested.

Initial interviews revealed that the teen met Haniff via WhatsApp and that they had been talking since late last year. He reportedly visited her in her bedroom on two prior occasions where they engaged in alleged sexual acts.

The La Romaine man was said to be visiting family in the area.

He was charged with two counts of sexual touching, one count of sexual penetration and one count of sexual grooming.

Investigations were carried out by Eastern Division Child Protection Unit Officers including acting Supt Candool, ASP Norbert, acting WP/Sgt Bain-Keller, acting WP/Sgt Felix, WPC Rampersad, WPC Brooks, PC Domonique and PC Thomas.

The charges were subsequently laid by PC Dominique.

Haniff was expected to appear before a Mayaro Magistrate on Friday morning.
