Daily-paid PoS City Corporation workers get salaries

Some 1500 daily-paid workers with the Port-of-Spain City Corporation have received outstanding wages from the Ministry of Finance.

President General of the Amalgamated Workers’ Union (AWU) Michael Prentice said workers were paid their regular wages for the last fortnight yesterday.

A meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday with Corporation CEO Prakash Dindial to discuss the payment of overtime, which arose due to a staff shortage at the city council, which forced employees to work longer hours.

Prentice said, however, he was pleased that the workers received their salaries.

The union at a media conference on Thursday vowed to take action if the workers were not paid their outstanding salaries, an approximated $4 million to $5 million for the fortnight, exclusive of overtime.

A mass membership meeting was expected to take place in the event that the outstanding funds were not disbursed by the Finance Ministry.
