Digicel Foundation wins international award

The Ethical Corporation has named the Digicel Haiti Foundation as winners of the prestigious “International Community Investment of the Year” award with the announcement being made at an awards gala in London in November.

The award highlighted the contribution and assistance from Digicel Foundation in developing the education opportunities for the children of Haiti. To date, Digicel has impacted the lives of over 55,000 students with the construction of 172 schools in Haiti and provided professional training for over 2,000 teachers.

Mindful of the economic constraints, especially following the devastating earthquake in 2010, the design aesthetic of the schools is simple but functional and easy to maintain – as well as being built to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes.

This is the second time that the Digicel Foundation has taken home an Ethical Corporation award – the first being back in 2015 with “Improvement of Education in Haiti” for the construction of 150 schools in the country after the 2010 earthquake.

Vanessa Slowey, CEO for Digicel Caribbean and Central America, said; “Every child deserves an education to give them a chance to reach their full potential. This is what our work in Haiti is all about. So this award is really for the entire Foundation team who worked very hard to ensure that students, teachers and parents can benefit from well-constructed schools and access to the right training to provide the students with a good quality education. Congratulations to them all.”

Other winning companies in other categories included Heineken, Lloyds Bank, Maersk, Ikea and BASF.
