Beneficiaries of the Digicel Foundation’s Aquaponics programme had the benefit of a refresher workshop on ‘Aquaponics Networking and Sensitisation’, on September 19, 2108.

The event took place at the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries’ Aquaculture Demonstration Centre, Valsayn.

Participants comprised officials from Special Needs schools across the country, New Life Ministries Drug Rehabilitation Centre and the Youth Training Facility. The training was administered by Harrinarine Lalla, Fisheries Officer at the Aquaculture Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries and his team. The Aquaculture Division has provided technical and maintenance support for the Foundation’s programme since its launch in 2014.

On welcoming the participants, Alicia Hospedales, Strategic Project Officer, Digicel Foundation gave an overview of the Aquaponics Programme.

She noted that the purpose of the session was to have an exchange of ideas among the beneficiaries and their hosts, and share solutions on challenges encountered with the Aquaponics systems.

According to Hospedales, “Over the past four years the programme was implemented in 17 Special Needs schools and other organisations which has resulted in over 12,000 persons being positively impacted. The Foundation is thrilled to be associated with any initiative that encourages persons to develop an entrepreneurial mind-set. This becomes even more applicable, given that many schools for persons with disabilities tend to be on the look-out for revenue-generation opportunities.”
