Dillon: ‘Riot’ at Immigration Detention Centre being investigated

An investigation is being carried out after riot police were called to the Immigration Detention Centre in Aripo on Thursday after Nigerian detainees staged a rowdy protest over what they described as their unlawful detention, violation of human rights and inhumane conditions.

It was also reported that several guards were held hostage.

National Security Minister Edmund Dillon in response to an urgent question in Parliament on Friday afternoon said the incident is under investigation.

‘The nature and cause of the alleged riot are being investigated. The investigation is ongoing and until such time remedies to treat with the root causes will be dealt with,” he said.

Dillon added that government has done work at the Immigration Detention Centre to make the environment much more comfortable for the detainees.
