Disabled man jailed for assaulting nine-year-old girl

A disabled man, who assaulted a nine-year-old girl has been sentenced to 14 days hard labour. He has also been ordered to pay $1000 compensation.

The matter was originally called on Monday before Magistrate Wendy Dougdeen Bally in the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court.

The accused is Jeffery Taylor, 52, from Enterprise, Chaguanas.

He was charged by PC Beckles of the Central Division.

Police prosecutor Sgt Sooden represented the State in the matter, while Taylor was represented defence attorney Shiva Boodoo.

Taylor was initially denied bail during his first court appearance on Monday.

However, the matter was recalled on Wednesday, where he plead guilty to the offence.

The matter was dealt with immediately and after submissions to the court of mitigation by Boodoo, the sentence was laid by the Magistrate.

The incident allegedly occurred last Friday at the home of the accused where the child was visiting.

The injury was so significant, police said, the girl was taken for medical treatment.

She has since been treated and discharged.
