Local artist and pilot Shannon Hutchinson launched her exhibition, entitled 'Dusk' at the Horizon's Art Gallery on September 25, 2018.
Hutchinson's love for aviation and art grew simultaneously from a young age. She grew up in the aviation industry and always aspired to fly.
Her artistic career was a success from inception when she started showing her work as a teenager. By the age of 17 she had also gained her private pilot’s license, and now, years later, she is a First Officer with Caribbean Airlines.
Shannon was part of a master painting curse under internationally renowned artist Peter Doig, she considers this a turning point in her artistic career as she began letting aviation creep into her artwork, before then her focus was on the human figure.
Hutchinson went on to complete her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from OCAD University in Toronto. In her final year, she wrote her thesis “Transience in Time and Space in Flight” in Italy where she learned how to make her own paint with raw pigments and copper dust, a technique which she still uses today and can be seen in the glossy seascapes in her upcoming show.
She won a number of awards for her thesis work including the coveted “Millennium Excellence Award” in Canada for innovation in her field two years in a row.
Over the last 20 years, her art has been showcased in well over 50 exhibitions and collections worldwide, most notably in Canada, Italy and the Caribbean. She has been fondly dubbed “The Flying Artist” since her early exhibition years as she has become well known locally for her career as a pilot as well as her artwork that is heavily influenced by aviation with old aviation maps and views from above.
The exhibition continues until October 6th. The Gallery is located at #37 Mucurapo Road, St. James. Opening hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, and 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Please call 628-9769 for further details.
