EBC: By-election process going smoothly so far

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) said Monday’s by-election process for the electoral districts of Belmont and Barataria is going smoothly so far.

Speaking to LoopTT, EBC Communications Manager Dominic Hinds said that the voting process, which began at 6:00 am, is going according to plan and all issues are being dealt with.

“So far, everything is generally going smoothly. We have had a few electors coming in today to vote, but were not registered. However all of these matters were addressed and the procedure is going forward with no real issues,” he said.

Hinds said he was unable to confirm how long it would take to tally the votes once the polls close at 6:00 pm, but added that this was a much smaller number of electors compared to a general election and therefore the overall process should not be as extensive.

Regarding an alleged discrepancy noted by leader of the Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP), Hinds said the EBC has not yet received a report of the matter.

“Once we receive the filed complaint, we will investigate the matter,” he said.

PEP leader Phillip Edward Alexander said he noted advertising paraphernalia near to polling stations and said that he had referred the matter to his attorneys.

Over 13,000 registered voters were expected to cast their ballots in Monday’s municipal bye-elections in Barataria and Belmont East - 10,207 in Barataria and 3,237 in Belmont.

A total of 13 polling stations - eight in Barataria and five in Belmont - will be open from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Candidates for the Belmont district are Nicole Young (PNM), Lianna Babb-Gonzales (UNC) and Felicia Holder (PEP), while candidates contesting the Barataria seat are Sharon Maraj-Dharam (UNC), Kimberly Small (PNM) and Christoph Samlal (PEP).
