EBC releases official recount results for six seats
The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has released the official results of the recounts which were carried out in six constituencies over the last week.
The recounts were requested in La Horquetta/Talparo, San Fernando West, St Joseph, Toco/Sangre Grande and Tunapuna by the United National Congress (UNC), while the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) originally requested a recount in Tobago East but conceded shortly after the recount began.
The People’s National Movement (PNM) had been declared the winner in each of these constituencies on the night of the election.
Throughout the recounts, the UNC highlighted several issues with the process that they called “irregularities”.
Candidates for St Joseph and Tunapuna, Ahloy Hunt and David Nakhid complained that they did not get signature specimens against which to compare signatures on the ballots. The EBC later contended that any issues with the signatures on the poll cards should have been raised on the night of the election.
Hunt as well as the UNC’s candidate for La Horquetta/Talparo Jerlean John, said they did not get access to the polling station diaries in their respective constituencies to see how many voters voted without a polling card or identification card.
The EBC, however, said that access to polling station diaries was not a regular part of the recount process.
Despite the complaints, however, the leader of the UNC Kamla Persad-Bissessar conceded the election today after the recounts were officially completed.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and his new cabinet will be sworn into office tomorrow.
