Emergency agencies meet with Piparo residents on evacuation plan

A team of officials has met with residents of Piparo to update them on response and evacuation plans in the event the mud volcano erupts.

CEO of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), Major General Rodney Smart and the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, Mr Raymond Seepaul, led a combined team of disaster managers to Piparo on Friday.

In a statement, the ODPM said to improve the community’s response capability, the residents were educated on developing family evacuation plans aligned to the community evacuation plan.

It said discussions were also held on developing community alert mechanisms such as using the community Masjid’s bell, vehicle horns and local communication groups etc.

The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government updated residents on collaborations that were taking place with the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to upgrade infrastructure in the area.

In addition, the residents were convinced to form a Community Emergency Response Team.

The ODPM said a Community Emergency Response Team would be established, along with the strengthening of the evacuation plan based on local knowledge of the area.

Residents would also provide further input into the strategy for the evacuation of vulnerable persons within the community.

The CEO of the ODPM also confirmed that the combined efforts of the Ministry of National Security and the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government and all other state agencies would result in the improvement of the overall response and resilience of the Piparo Community.
