Farm Road community gets refurbished recreational space

Residents of Farm Road, St. Joseph and environs welcomed the New Year with a refurbished basketball court.

The court situated at the St Joseph Recreational Grounds was officially reopened on Saturday 18th January, 2020 through the efforts of the Farm Road Development Foundation and the Digicel Foundation.

The Foundation said in a statement issued this week that the space will go a long way toward creating positive activities for the community.

"Community spaces are key to productivity.  However, these spaces need to be accessible, adequately equipped, well resourced and sometimes managed by proactive groups to really be beneficial,"

"The refurbished space is the centre of community activities and will be a shining light in youth productivity," the statement said.

The Foundation said over 20 children from within the community attended the event and were particularly excited at the unveiling.

The US$4,100 EPIC initiative covered repairs to the outer fence, repainted the posts and court lines, replaced backboards, ball rings, nets and installed new concrete benches.

Residents of the community of Farm Road, St. Joseph and neighbouring areas such as Curepe and Mt. D’or now have access to the recreational space where young persons in the areas can connect, and participate in extracurricular activities.

President of the Farm Road Development Foundation Rhona Mohan, who is affectionately known as “mother of the community” because of her passion to see the community thrive, shared,  “it was definitely an emotional day for the residents as we come together to reopen the court after being in a dilapidated state for such a long time.”

Victor Amings brought remarks on behalf of the youths of Farm Road, St Joseph. He said, “In the past we sat on the floor after we played basketball because there were no benches, now it’s comfortable and feels safer.”

In her closing remarks, Digicel Foundation Project Coordinator Lynelle Callender conveyed that it was a pleasure collaborating with the Farm Road Development Foundation.  She said, “the group displayed tenacity and a relentless approach to the development of their community”.
