FCB Poetry Slam runner-up to host first ever show
Tonight marks the first independent show of 23-year-old spoken word poet Kyle Hernandez.
The show, titled “Uncalled For” takes place tonight at the Little Carib Theatre in Woodbrook, and all interested parties are invited to come out to what has been promised to be a “memorable and lively” experience.
Speaking to LoopTT earlier on Friday, Hernandez explained that he believed his show, and similar outings were very important in this modern time, as people “need art” and a “new normal”.
“I am very excited that this show is under the umbrella of Absurd Theatre. Absurdism shifts what is perceived as normal through brazen humor and stylised chaos. And if you ask me, with so many things going on in this country, so much negativity everyday in the news, this country could use a new normal,” Hernandez explained.
The 23-year-old said that he felt this was the right time to do the show, as he had just finished the First Citizen’s National Poetry Slam where he placed second.
“I’ve been doing this for several years, and professional for four (years). I’ve been blessed to travel with my art, even doing a five-city tour in London recently in England. So I’ve had opportunities to learn and grow, and see things, and I’m just trying to give back some of that. I believe that we need to give back, so I’m also very active in things such as school tours, performance workshops and advocacy campaigns.
“Personally though, I see this show as the next step towards cementing myself as a full time performance artist. This show is a culmination of the work I’ve done for the past few years… all the poetry, music, improve theatre, and even Absurdism, which is how this show is going to be tackled,” Hernandez said.
Tickets for the show are $100, and show time is 7pm today.
