Female driver questioned after cyclist killed in accident

The investigations into the death of cyclist Roland Rampersad on Tuesday night are continuing.

The 47-year-old father of five, from Mussarap Trace, Barrackpore, was killed at about 7:00 pm that night at the corner of Rochard Douglas Road and Sukhan Trace, Barrackpore.

According to police reports, Rampersad was riding his bicycle along the roadway when he was struck by Nissan Frontier motor vehicle which was driven by a woman.

The woman, police said, was attempting to overtake a line of traffic when she came in contact with the bicyclist.

Rampersad was killed instantly.

The driver did not immediately stop, but rather made her way home, and then to the San Fernando General Hospital. She was later questioned by police after she told doctors that she had been involved in an accident.

Cpl Langley is continuing inquiries.

An autopsy is expected to be performed to confirm the cause of death, following which, police will seek instructions from officials at the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on how to proceed against the driver of the van.
