Five held by police after Maloney shooting

Five people were arrested on Tuesday afternoon during a police exercise in Maloney.

According to police reports, the exercise was part of the Maloney police station's continued pressure against criminal elements following a spike in crimes in the district.

The exercise was led by Corporal Ali and took place between midday and 5.00 pm.

It saw officers go through the Maloney Gardens community and question several persons.

Among the persons detained were two "high priority offenders" who were well known to police for their connection to gang-related activities.

Officers also detained one man in connection with the confrontation in Maloney on January 25 in which a police officer was shot.

The five, who are between the ages of 25 and 32, are to be questioned by various units, following which they will be charged.

More on this as it becomes available.
