Flood victims begin to receive relief cheques

Flood victims have begun to receive their relief cheques from the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services.

In a statement, the Ministry said some flood victims from Sangre Grande, Greenvale, La Horquetta and Mafeking received their cheques on October 27, 2018.

The distribution comes one week after disastrous flooding which occurred in these areas from October 19-22, 2018.

The Ministry said distributions began at around 2:30 pm yesterday on Friday at the Arima Velodrome for residents of Greenvale/La Horquetta, as well as at the Las Lomas Primary School for flood victims of Kelly and St Helena.

A distribution also took place at TTPost Head Office, Piarco, for Oropune residents.

The cheques were provided to replace several household items lost as a result of the catastrophic flooding in order to bring restoration and a sense of normalcy to affected persons.

Minister of Social Development and Family Services, Cherrie-Ann Crichlow-Cockburn, was told of some of the struggles faced by the recipients during and after the rains and expressed empathy to those affected.

She reassured them that while the Ministry and Government may not be able to replace everything lost, the relief should provide some measure of assistance.

She stated that the Ministry’s Team worked tirelessly to ensure that the assessments were done so that some of the grants cheques were ready within the shortest possible time. She reiterated the Government’s commitment to bringing immediate relief. She also indicated that assessments are continuing in several areas over the weekend and into next week and that cheques will continue to be distributed next week until all claims are satisfied.

The Ministry also apologised for any inconvenience caused to affected persons who would have had to wait long periods and also for those who were not able to collect cheques on Friday, as the distribution process is ongoing while cheques continue to be prepared.

The Ministry continued its distribution process on Saturday in Sangre Grande as well as at Mafeking.

For further information on assessments, and other queries, persons may contact the Ministry at 623 - 2608; Ext 5402, 5429 or call toll free at 800-1MSD.
