Former Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma has died

Former Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma has died.

He was 76.

He was said to have been ailing for some time.

Sharma served as Chief Justice from 2002 and 2008.

Holder of a Chaconia Gold medal and Trinity Cross, Sharma's tenure as Chief Justice was shrouded in controversy when he was accused of interfering in the trial of former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday who was sentenced to two years in prison for corruption.

Despite attempts to impeach him, an international tribunal ruled that there was insufficient evidence to remove Sharma from office on December 2007. He resigned in January 2008.
