Four detained following police exercise, high-speed chase
Four men, who have been linked to various robberies in the Eastern Division, are expected to appear before a Sangre Grande Magistrate on Monday.
The suspects were held during a police operation in which one of the men allegedly fired at officers in an attempt to flee the scene.
Two of the men were said to be from Valencia, one was from Sangre Grande, while the fourth suspect was said to be from Enterprise.
Officers of the Eastern Division’s Special Operations Unit, led by Cpl Ramnarine, were conducting inquiries following a report of an armed robbery at El Orinoco Bar, along the Eastern Main Road, Sangre Grande on Tuesday.
This led the officers to a home in Valencia on Friday where they held three men.
While en route to Maloney to detain the fourth suspect, they observed the individual driving a vehicle along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway.
The officers made moves to intercept the car but the suspect drove off.
A high-speed chase ensued, and the vehicle was eventually stopped a short distance away.
The suspect, police said, opened fire on them, prompting the lawmen to return fire, wounding the man.
He was then taken for medical treatment.
A revolver and a number of items believed to have been stolen were recovered in the vehicle.
Also involved in this exercise were Sgt Harper, PC Singh, PC Lezama, PC Samuel, PC Benoit, PC Khan, PC West, PC Budhooram, and PC James.
