Four years hard labour for man who robbed maxi-taxi driver

A 34-year-old Siparia man has been sentenced to four years hard labour after he allegedly robbed a maxi taxi driver last month.

Ato Lezama plead guilty to the offences of armed robbery and robbery with violence.

The charges stemmed from an incident on the morning of July 3, along Sutton Street, San Fernando.

Lezama got into a maxi taxi, however, upon reaching the vicinity of Sutton Street, he pulled out a firearm, placed it to the driver’s head and announced a robbery.

There was a struggle, following which he relieved the victim of $600.

Lezama then fled the scene on foot.

The police were notified and investigations were launched by officers of the Southern Division, including PC Harripersad and PC Frankbull.

Lezama was held a few days later.

He plead guilty to the offence and apologised for his actions.

However, due to the serious nature of the allegations, the court opted to send a strong message and a custodial sentence was given.
