Fuad Khan: PNM operating in a cabal
MP for Barataria/San Juan, Dr Fuad Khan, is criticising Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley’s management of Government Ministries following the most recent Cabinet reshuffle.
In a statement issued on Monday, Dr Khan expressed concern that poor government decisions were being made by overworked members of parliament.
He was speaking about the collection of the Lottery Tax by the National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB) of which close to $1 million dollars must be refunded. He also mentioned the threat to fine citizens $500.00 on a summary conviction if they failed to submit the Property Tax Evaluation Forms in which the courts eventually intervened and ruled that the process was meant to be voluntary.
“While much of the blame is being levelled against Colm Imbert as the Minister responsible for both of these debacles, one must spare a thought for the excess responsibilities that he has been saddled with since assuming office.”
Dr Khan also questioned why Stuart Young was appointed to head multiple Ministries especially since the National Security Ministry requires significant attention.
“…despite being made a full-fledged Minister of two separate Ministries, Stuart Young remains a Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister so that he can intervene in any Ministry decision upon Dr. Rowley's instructions. One might have thought that during a time when the incoming Commissioner of Police faces so much pressure from both the Police Force and the public, that the Minister would provide guidance and assistance. But how can Mr. Young do so, as he is not only being appointed at the same time, but also has to split his attention in so many other directions?”
The Opposition MP said this type of action implies Dr Rowley’s lack of faith in his administration or his poor judgement when choosing candidates.
He said these recent acts indicate that the Government is operating in a “cabal”.
“The fact is, while there appears to be a full complement of "Ministers" on the surface, this country is being managed by a Cabal within the government. It is for this reason that Marlene McDonald could be fired on two separate occasions yet still be shoe-horned into Cabinet by the way of the Ministry of Public Administration,” he said.
