Girls, women held by police during El Socorro raid

Police said 12 Venezuelan women and girls were detained following a police exercise in El Socorro on Tuesday.

The 12, inclusive of eight women and four girls under the age of 18, were held during a raid at an apartment complex along El Socorro Extension Road, between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm on Tuesday.

The officers, under the supervision of ACP Belfon and Snr Sup Phillip, received intelligence which led them to the location.

Once there the officers, with the aid of interpreters, asked the 12 to produce documents to indicate their legal status in the country.

Police said none of the 12 were able to show documentation confirming their legal immigration status.

As a result, they were detained, and are to be questioned further.

The adults were handed over to immigration officials, while the minors were handed over to Child Protection Services.

Police are still trying to determine if the 12 were trafficked, or if they came on their own accord.

More on this as it becomes available.
